What should a guided reading lesson look like?

A level A guided reading lesson will include activities to build independent readers. You will teach your students reading strategies, decoding strategies, comprehension skills, word work skills, and emergent writing. I know; it sounds like a lot! It doesn’t have to be complicated, though.

To begin your lesson, give students a quick overview of the text, including the title, author and a brief introduction to the story. Although this is a necessary element to begin your Guided Reading lesson, be sure to keep it short!

There are three essential elements in Guided Reading, they are before reading, during reading, and after reading.

Really effective guided reading sessions have a sharp focus and stick to it. Try keeping to just one or two aspects of the Content Domain.   • Invite children to discuss the meaning of the text.

    8 minutes for warm-up,word work,and introduction

  • 8 minutes for setting a purpose and independent reading (don’t forget to take a running record during reading)
  • 4 minutes for summarizing,comprehension skill practice,and/or a quick write
