What is a Lazutin hive?
The Lazutin hive is a horizontal hive with extra deep frames. This hive is well insulated for all types of extreme climate conditions. Access to the frames and bottom is from the backside so the bees aren’t disturbed by your presence.
Where does Dr Leo Sharashkin live?
southern Missouri
Author of world-renowned research in sustainable agriculture, he lives with his wife and four children on a forest homestead in the Ozarks in southern Missouri where they raise bees in a variety of low-maintenance, easy-to-build horizontal hives.
What is a Layens hive?
The Layens hive is a horizontal hive holding 20 large frames (13” long by 16” deep) on one level. (The number of frames can be smaller or greater depending on your local honeyflows.) It is loaded with frames during the spring inspection and then opened in the fall for honey harvest.
How does a Warre hive work?
A Warre hive is a vertical top bar hive that uses bars instead of frames, usually with a wooden wedge or guide on the bars from which the bees build their own comb, just like they do in nature. The Warre (pronounced: WAR-ray) hive is named after its inventor, French monk Abbé Émile Warré.
What is a horizontal bee hive?
A horizontal hive (or “long hive”) is a single-box beehive designed so that honey bees build comb structures parallel to the ground. Horizontal hives mimic spaces bees inhabit in the wild, like a tree hollow. By contrast, the more common Langstroth hive consists of multiple, vertically-stacked boxes.
How do you keep bees in horizontal hives?
In the horizontal hive, you put multiple racks into a big box and leave them alone. You only need to check on them once or twice a year. Put the bees in this kind of box with nothing, just the wired frames to help hold the comb as they build it.
How much honey is in a Layens hive?
In the Layens hive, there are no supers and you simply remove a frame at a time that only average 8 lbs per frame. In most cases I pull 10 of the 20 frames from a hive presuming the hive looks healthy and full so I still end up with approximately 80 lbs of honey per hive, just managed 8 lbs at a time.
Are Warre hives any good?
They are great for beekeepers seeking to get more pollination in their garden or simply to help the bees, as they’re not known for their honey yields. Warre beehives are also a good choice for beekeepers who don’t have the time for weekly inspections but still desire backyard bees.
How do you manage a Warre hive?
Warre hives are meant to be expanded with the nadiring practice, by adding empty boxes to the bottom of the hive. The bees will generally build from the top down, and as their bottom most box becomes 80% full, an empty box can be added underneath. Then, excess honey will be harvested off the top of the hive.
Do you need a queen excluder in a horizontal hive?
No Queen Excluder In a horizontal hive, the queen can go wherever she wants. However, as in the wild, she will likely keep the brood in a close-knit section of the box. The rest of the hive will be available for food and honey stores.
Are horizontal hives better than vertical?
Top-bar hives have some distinct advantages – they can be built so that the top is at waist height, making them easy to inspect without any lifting of heavy boxes. Frames can also be easily removed. When the colony needs extra room, it’s simply a matter of adding extra frames horizontally.

What happened to Alexander Lazutin of hives?
Sadly, Lazutin passed away this past February from a brain tumor. However, prior to that, he and his wife, Lena, kept approximately 100 hives in the Kaluga region of Russia (approximately 150 miles outside of Moscow.)
Was Lazutin’s conclusion about bees faulty?
However, Lazutin purports that this conclusion was faulty. Observations were skewed by logging activities that had destroyed trees with larger hollows. In other words, bees were simply making the best of what was available.
Where did you get your inspiration for the design of hives?
Initial inspiration came from Fedor Lazutin’s book “Keeping Bees With A Smile” available from horizontalhive.comor Amazon. Also see Dr. Leo Sharashkin’s instructional videos on Youtube.
