What is the best lure for trevally?

Posted on 01/07/2020 by Emilia Duggan

What is the best lure for trevally?

Giant trevally will take live or dead whole fish and fillet baits as well as soft plastics and trolled minnows, but by far the most exciting and sporting way to target them is on large surface lures like poppers and stickbaits.

How do you catch trevally on bait?

The best baits for trevally are small cubes of pilchard, skipjack or any other common baitfish. If trevally are schooling on the surface and feeding on krill they may take a small trolled lure, jig or softbait cast into the school.

How do you get big trevally?

Some of the best giant trevally fishing is done using poppers and a ‘rip and sit’ slow retrieval that will create a big splash and then allow the rear of the popper to sink for a moment before continuing. Other techniques include minnow lures, leadhead jigs and live bait rigs.

Are trevally bottom feeders?

Bottom Feeders: For example golden trevally have no teeth and blubbery lips that allow them to feed on crustaceans and prey that is hiding on the bottom. Diamond Trevally do the same and 90% of the time they will eat a stationary lure of the bottom and start running off with it.

Do soft plastics need leader?

Fluorocarbon leader plays a very important role in soft plastics fishing. It’s essentially a fused fishing line that is thinner in diameter and harder for fish to see. It also provides some level of stretch which the braid does not provide giving more leeway, so fish don’t snap your line.

How do you fish for trevally?

Small soft plastics fished on light jig heads are often irresistible to big trevally. Keep an an eye on the shallows as the tide recedes as trevally will frequently move steadily downstream with the current zig zagging from deep to shallow water.

Where is the best place to catch a trevally?

A rocky outcrop or fringing coral ledge scattered with coral bommies is the best location. Ryan catches a nice Giant Trevally (GT) off Cooktown. Simply work these edges or outcrops using big poppers and a heavy duty spin outfit with a good retrieval rate.

Where do Trevally fish live?

Tagging studies by local fisheries scientists have shown that trevally are not a wide ranging fish and tend to stay within a 50 kilometres radius of where they spent their juvenile years. They tend to move into the shallow waters of many estuaries of spring and move back out into deep water in late summer.

Do Trevally fish hunt in schools?

The larger specimens encountered in estuarine environments tend to hunt alone, unlike in the open ocean where schools of fish are common. Tagging studies by local fisheries scientists have shown that trevally are not a wide ranging fish and tend to stay within a 50 kilometres radius of where they spent their juvenile years.
