The Awakino tunnel on State Highway 3 in South Waikato is days away from closing. After a century of funnelling a single lane of Taranaki traffic in and out of the province, the Awakino tunnel is just days away from being closed to vehicles.
Is SH3 closed?
State Highway 3 (SH3) will be closed between 10am and 2pm from Tuesday 15 February to Thursday 17 February while crews complete pre-reseal repairs at Mt. Please plan ahead and avoid travelling through Mt. Messenger between 10am and 2pm on these dates.
Is the desert road open today NZ?

Is Saddle Road Open 2021?
The Saddle Road will be open to residents, Te Ahu A Turanga project teams and for emergency access at all times. Heavy vehicles are reminded that Balance Valley Road is not a suitable detour route and should use the marked detour route on the Pahiatua Track. Plan ahead for a safe, enjoyable journey.

How long will the Awakino Gorge road closures last?
The NZ Transport Agency (NZTA) says temporary road closures to remove a crashed milk tanker on State Highway 3 through the Awakino gorge are now expected to last for around 45 minutes, not up to two hours as advised earlier.
Where are the two Awakino Gorge bypasses being built?
The stage has now been set for the construction of the two bypasses – one at Mt Messenger and the other at the Awakino Gorge. At Mt Messenger a six-kilometre bypass is planned to run east of the existing highway and will include a 125-metre bridge over an important wetland area and a 235-metre-long tunnel south-east of the present highway.
What’s happening with the Awakino tunnel project?
Construction on the two-bridge bypass of Awakino Tunnel started in September 2019 and was completed in mid-2021. The project includes a passing lane and realigning a section of highway north of the tunnel. Safety and resilience improvements have been progressing well along the 58km stretch of highway which includes Awakino Tunnel and Mt Messenger.

The State Highway 3 Awakino Gorge to Mt Messenger Programme is made up of: The bypass of Mt Messenger is 5.2km long with additional work at the southern end creating about 6 km of improvements. It is located east of the existing highway (identified as Option C in the June 2017 public engagement).
