Why is Schnebly Hill closed?
Schnebly Hill Road closed due to large boulder blocking path. Road will be closed until the rock is removed and the road is safe for travel.
Do you need a permit to camp in Coconino National Forest?
A Special Use Permit is required for groups larger than 75 people, or for any size group which charges a fee to attend an event. Check out our Events/Commercial Permits page. No camping or campfires on the forest within city limits. Do not camp on private property unless you have the owner’s permission.

How do you get to Coconino National Forest?
Most of the forest is south of Flagstaff, but to get to the northern portion, take I-40 to Highway 89 and go north. You’ll enter the forest near the turn off for Sunset Crater National Monument.
Can you drive up Mount Elden?
It’s one of the highest mountain roads of Arizona. The road to the summit, located within the Coconino National Forest, is totally unpaved. It’s called Elden Lookout Road (Forest road 557). 4×4 vehicle required. The summit hosts a few communication towers.
Can you camp off Schnebly Hill Road?
There is no camping at this spot, and in fact there is no camping any further along Schnebly Hill Road. At this point, the road is all downhill and quite treacherous. Coconino National Forest offers a 14-day maximum stay within its confines.
