How do you perform an IVP procedure?
During intravenous pyelogram
- X-rays are taken of your urinary tract before any dye is injected.
- X-ray dye is injected through your IV line.
- X-ray images are taken at timed intervals as the dye flows through your kidneys to the ureters and into your bladder.
- Toward the end of the exam, you may be asked to urinate again.
What is the process of IVU?
An IVU is an X-ray examination of your kidneys and bladder. During the test you will be given an injection of a contrast agent (an X-ray ‘dye’), which highlights your kidneys and bladder making them stand out much better than on an ordinary X-ray image.
How do you prepare for IVU?
It is also advisable to come on an empty stomach for the procedure, but, you may have a cup of tea or coffee prior to coming for the procedure, if it is at least two hours before. If you have constipation, you may need bowel preparation for two days or more.

How long does it take to do an IVP?
An IVP usually takes less than 1 hour. If your kidneys work more slowly, the test can last up to 4 hours. You should be able to go back to your normal diet and activities afterward. The doctor may tell you to drink more fluids than normal to flush the contrast dye from your body.

Why is compression bands used in IVP?
As the contrast material is processed by the kidneys, a series of images is taken to determine the actual size of the kidneys and to image the urinary tract in action as it begins to empty. The technologist may apply a compression band around the body to better visualize the urinary structures.
Why is bowel prep used for IVP?
Your physician has asked us to perform and interpret an I.V.P. for you. This is an x-ray examination of your kidneys, their drainage to your bladder, and your bladder. For this study to be of greatest value, it is necessary for your bowel to be as clean as possible.
